How to resize your photos for social media.

Whether you’ve been active on social media for a while, or if you are just starting these accounts, you will soon realize that when it comes to social media, visual content and social media go together  and all of it is vital when competing for the “surfer’s” and your potential customer’s attention.  Detail, and every last pixel count!

So. you’ve had your professional headshot done and you have the files ready to upload to your company website, Twitter, LinkedIn (or other preferred social media sites accounts )…but are they? – They will be, if I do them for you, but most people will just have a large resolution jpg – or similar file.    You know that your clients’ brains respond to great images, and you want to build something beautiful to improve and drive engagement.

The simple question is, how to size the images to suit the particular platform’s algorithm. There is so much to consider when you create images for social media—  for me, the orientation, size and shape will be dictated at your headshot session. But, if you already have your headshot and you want it to display at optimum levels for different social media streams, then here are the tips and tricks, links and guides to make them all perfect for the specific media.

I am always being asked what the ideal sizes are for individual social media sites, and are they interchangeable? The answer is no, they aren’t interchangeable, but there are some great websites that offer tools to get the ideal crop for your image.

Here is the guide on the image specs and size on the six most popular social networks,  all in one place:-

Facebook  – 1,200 x 628                               Twitter     – 1,024 x 512

LinkedIn   – 800 x 800                                 Google+    – 800 x 1,200

Pinterest   – 735 x 1,102                               Instagram  – 1,200 x 1,200

These are the ideal image sizes for cover photos and profile pictures, Facebook ads and Twitter cards. Most of the major social media channels like Facebook and Twitter now give you added control over how your profile picture and cover photo look. They have some simple, intuitive tools to resize and scale these pictures until they’re pixel perfect!

Here are two great photo sizing templates that cover most networks

In experimenting with the fastest, easiest way to create images that will work well in social media feeds, there are a couple of image sizes that always seem to work: one size for horizontal (landscape) images and one for vertical (portrait) images.

  • Horizontal (landscape) – 1,024 x 512
  • Vertical (portrait) – 800 x 1,200

One of the simplest ways for creating the 1,024 x 512 pixel images is to use Pablo. You can create an image in under 30 seconds and share directly to Twitter, Facebook, and Buffer.
